60+ Classes
Description:
A class suitable for those suffering with, or wanting to help prevent osteoporosis and arthritis. A gentle class concentrating on core stability, flexibility, weight bearing work and balance.
Who is this class for?
For those above the age of 60 who want to achieve the most out of their bodies. For those suffering with osteoporosis / arthritis.
In the words of Joseph Pilates ‘You’re only as young as your spine’.
What can the Kendra 60+ class offer me?
There is a strong focus on gentle mobility for all of the joints to maintain and improve flexibility. Weight bearing activity is key in maintaining strong, healthy bones and joints, alongside core stability and balance work.
Rachael has seen a remarkable improvement in the strength, flexibility, balance and confidence of her 60+ clients. She finds the class extremely rewarding.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 are affected by low bone density. With many Pilates clients falling into the 50 years plus age bracket, this is a condition that we need to consider when designing Pilates programmes for this sector.
The Role of Pilates
The importance of weight-bearing exercise that loads and strengthens bone cannot be underestimated. In fact, research has shown that physical exercise alone can halt the progression of bone loss (Smith & Gilligan 1987). And according to the Surgeon General’s Report, “Health and Fitness professionals can play a major role in . . . identifying and advising high-risk individuals and those who have osteoporosis” (HHS 2004).
